Q. You have recently joined Peter Reid as assistant coach of Mumbai FC in the Indian Super league

What challenges do you face with this new venture?
THE INDIAN SUPER LEAGUE (ISL) IS A BRAND NEW LEAGUE BASED ON THE IPL CRICKET CONCEPT WHICH REVOLUTIONISED CRICKET IN INDIA. THE LEAGUE IS FRANCHISED BASED WITH THE OWNERS INCLUDING BOLLY WOOD STARS AND SASHIN TENDULKAR. THERE ARE MANY CHALLENGES IN THIS, SUCH AS OPERATING THROUGH A DRAFT SYSTEM AND HAVING 6 FOREIGNERS AND 5 INDIANS IN THE TEAM. PLUS IT’S A TIGHT SEASON 14 GAMES PLUS FINALS IN 3 MONTHS. SO HOW THE SQUAD IS MANAGED IS VITAL. Issues like rotation and recovery are major worries.

Q. Can you explain your coaching philosophy and what in your opinion makes a successful team?

MAYBE I HAVE BECOME A REALIST IN COACHING.BUT AFTER COACHING FOR OVER 30 YEARS I HAVE CONCLUDED THE ONLY PHILOSOPHY IS TO WIN AS MANY GAMES AS YOU CAN! THE GAME IS JUDGED ON RESULTS.IF YOU WIN GAMES, CUPS, LEAGUES THEN YOU WILL CONTINUE TO BE EMPLOYED. THIS IS AT A SENIOR LEVEL, WHEN WORKING WITH YOUTH THEN DEVELOPMENT ISSUES AND FOOTBALL EDUCATION ARE MORE IMPORTANT.

Q. You have coached in many different countries how has this shaped you as a coach?

ITS TAUGHT ME THAT YOU HAVE TO ADAPT TO DIFFERENT CULTURES. IT HELPS ALSO TO LEARN LANGUAGES. IF YOU CAN SAY “BEND YOUR RUN” IN THE PLAYERS LANGUAGE IT IS SO MUCH MORE EFFICENT. IT HAS ALSO MEANT THAT I HAVE HAD TO USE BETTER ENGLISH AND AVOID FOOTBALL CLICHES.

ITS ALSO TAUGHT ME TO LISTEN BETTER!

BUT THERE ARE MASSIVE CULTURAL DIFFERENCES. SUCH AS THE EFFECT OF MARRIAGE ON PLAYERS OR THE ROLE OF “FACE” IN OTHERS. WORKING ABROAD MAKES YOU A BETTER MAN MANAGER. IF YOU GET IT WRONG IN SOME COUNTRIES YOU ARE GONE THE NEXT DAY.

Q. Can you give us an insight to your management style?

NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO YOU HAVE TO HAVE THE SUPPORT AND BELIEVE OF THE PLAYERS. YOU CAN’T FOOL THEM. ALSO MORE AND MORE IN MODERN FOOTBALL YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO MANAGE UPWARDS AND WORK IN HARMONY WITH THE ADMINISTRATION. THE GAME IS CHANGING YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO ADAPT AND EVOLVE WITH IT

Q. What positions and regions would you like to work?

I’VE WORKED IN ELEVEN DIFFERENT COUNTRIES AND HAD GREAT EXPERIENCES IN ALL. I REALLY ENJOYED THE MIDDLE EAST (BAHRAIN) AND I STILL SPEAK ARABIC.I FOUND THE FACILITIES IN THE MIDDLE EAST GREAT TO WORK IN. SOME OF THE OTHER COUNTRIES IT’S A DAILY BATTLE TO FIND A GOOD TRAINING PITCH.

IT’S A CLICHÉ BUT YOU NEVER STOP LEARNING AND ADDED TO THAT THE INTERNET HAS MASSIVELY IMPROVED THE SPREAD OF FOOTBALL KNOWLEDGE
